This is yet another exhibition of folk art from various regions of Poland that we are presenting in the Institute's undercroft. This time we invite you to get acquainted with art from The northeastern part of our country. Suwalszczyzna rests on the former border with Prussia to the west, meets the Königsberg Oblast to the north, borders Lithuania and Belarus to the east and Podlasie to the south.

For more than a dozen centuries, many peoples and cultures swept through the area of today's Suwalszczyzna. Originally, the Jaćwings lived here. In the 15th century, these lands came under the influence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which initiated the settlement of Polish, Lithuanian and Ruthenian peoples. During the period of the First Republic of Poland, Mazovians and Prussians penetrated the area. In time, this peculiar cultural melting pot was completed by Old Believers and Jews. Therefore, all scholarly studies of the artwork and folk art of Suwałki point to the great diversity of patterns and motifs found in the products. To the ethnic, cultural and religious richness should be added the influence of the specific natural conditions of the lake district.

For the purposes of this exhibition, a representation from Suwałki's creative abundance was prepared by Dr. Krzysztof Snarski. The exhibition features works from virtually all fields of folk art: from braiding, pottery or blacksmithing through weaving, painting and sculpture to ritual art, folk costumes and architecture.

The exhibition is accompanied by a superbly prepared by Dr. Snarski and richly illustrated guidebook. In it the author describes not only the historical and cultural context of the region, an outline of ethnographic research of Suwałki, but also all the presented fields of folk art.

The exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

You are cordially invited!
