Customs associated with the first spring sowing

In the old Polish countryside, sowing started a whole cycle of ritual procedures around plant growth, their protection against diseases, pests and natural disasters. An interesting custom, still cultivated today in the vicinity of Strzelce Opolskie, is the sowing of hearts and crosses in the fields. According to tradition, it is supposed to guarantee the success of future crops.

Herbs from Our Lady's garden

The Blessed Virgin Mary was held in special reverence by the rural population. She was associated with agriculture and cultivation of the land. According to legend, she saved the world from annihilation when God, wishing to punish people for ungodliness, ordered the destruction of grain. Her gentleness, caring and good heart were also appreciated. Therefore, the feast of Our Lady of the Herbs was considered one of the most important events of the year.
