Customs associated with the first spring sowing

In the old Polish countryside, sowing started a whole cycle of ritual procedures around plant growth, their protection against diseases, pests and natural disasters. An interesting custom, still cultivated today in the vicinity of Strzelce Opolskie, is the sowing of hearts and crosses in the fields. According to tradition, it is supposed to guarantee the success of future crops.
