W badaniach terenowych bierze udział każdy praktykujący etnograf. Narodowy Instytut Kultury i Dziedzictwa Wsi od roku 2023 realizuje program własny „Etnomozaika. Współczesne dziedzictwo kulturowe wsi”, odwołujący się do prac Oskara Kolberga. Projekt ten ma być rodzajem opracowania współczesnej kultury ludowej i tradycyjnej początku XXI wieku, prezentującego ją w perspektywie ogólnopolskiej.
