62 Wanda Szkulmowska's Pałuki Folk Art Competition Spring in Pałuki.

On Saturday, May 18, the ceremonial conclusion of the oldest folk art competition in Poland was held. It has been held in Szubin since 1963. The 62nd Wanda Szkulmowska Pałuki Folk Art Competition Spring in Paluki was an opportunity for artists and those taking their first steps in the fields of embroidery, ornamentation and sculpture to undergo jury evaluation

In the Paluki region, embroidery can be found on items of clothing (cap, orifice, blouse, white petticoat, red petticoat-piecing, apron) or on napkins and tablecloths. As for interior decoration, we will encounter Paluki spiders made of straw and tissue paper, harvest gossip and flowers (bouquets, garlands, rouge).

This year, a record number of 336 works were submitted for the competition: 43 adults sent 64 works of embroidery, 107 from the field of ornamentation and 48 bas-reliefs, sculptures and toys, and in the group of children and teenagers of 35 people, ornamentation prevailed (101 works), no embroidery was submitted but as many as 16 sculptures, which was also a record.

The winners of the 62nd Paluk Folk Art Competition were:

  • In the field of embroidery: Maria Tomczak (special award), 1st prizes: Krystyna Ługiewicz, Małgorzata Bołka, Iwona Nowak, Maria Gruchała; 2nd prizes: Halina Kaszewska, Lidia Kierejewska, Iwona Bojko, Renata Adamczyk, Barbara Nojgebauer; III awards: Irena Nogalska, Wieslawa Kotarba, Krystyna Bylicka; and honorable mentions: Barbara Kalka, Anna Janke;
  • from the field of decoration: Małgorzata Bołka (1st prize of the Szkulmowski family); 1st prize: Jadwiga Bołka, Wiesława Palczewska, Małgorzata Kopczyńska, Maria Tomczak, Agata Maludzińska, Julia Kubiak, Katarzyna Pietroń-Gbór; 2nd prizes: Rozalia Krzemkowska, Jagoda Koguciuk, Marlena Bałka, Paweł Pietroń; III awards: Urszula Szpechcińska, Dominika Komorowska-Pietroń. Maria Kwiatkowska; and honorable mentions: Ewa Jaszak, Elżbieta Piechowiak, Krystyna Kwiatkowska;
  • For sculpture: Piotr Woliński (special prize); 1st prize: Ariel Czechowski, Eryk Tubiszewski, Piotr Marciniuk; 2nd prize: Marek Szpechciński, Dorota Wilczyńska-Sztyma; 3rd prize: Mariusz Woźniak, Agata Zielińska and honorable mention: Krzysztof Jablonski and in the category of sculpture - toys honorable mention: Miroslaw Nowak.

All children participating in the contest were awarded prizes:

  • In the field of decoration, the awards went to: Jakub Palczewski, Iga Palczewska, Natalia Krzemkowska, Marika Pawlowska, Sandra Kapczynska, Zofia Kardzis, Alicja Bauza, Jakub Duda, Martyna Kwaśniewska, Gabriela Trzebiatowska, Anna Ollesz, Antonina Piekarska, Marcelina Balcerek, Julia Molota, Jagoda Bogusz, Antonina Gbór, Zuzanna Bankiert, and honorable mentions: Natalia Siekiera, Szymon Smoter, Szymon Prybinski, Luiza Maludzińska, Aleksandra Wypych, Julia Szlingier, Vera Mikhajleuskaya, Michalina Adamczyk, Emilia Liana, Oliwia Sobczak, Paulina Malinowska;
  • For sculpture, the awardees were: Kacper Piwoński, Olga Bagrowska, Agata Bagrowska, Marcel Sadowski, Eliza Mróz, Gustaw Napierała and Witold Napierała.

During the ceremony, the groups "Piekielnica" from Biskupin and "Autumn Flower" from Szubin presented traditional Palukian songs. After the awards were handed out, Ms. Kinga Turska-Skowronek presented the portal of the Maria Znamierowska-Prüfferowa Ethnographic Museum in Torun under the name of Ulotne Tradycje (http://ut.etnomuzeum.pl/) with a prepared bookmark on Pałuki embroidery, which has a chance to be included on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage still in 2024. The post-competition exhibition can be viewed until May 24 this year at the Szubin House of Culture.
